Opened on October 1, 1928, Newark Airport was the first major airport in the New York area. Amelia Earhart dedicated the Newark Airport Administration Building in 1935 opening North America's first commercial airline terminal (second one in the world). Newark was the busiest airport in the world until LaGuardia Airport opened in 1939, dividing New York's air traffic and allowing Chicago Midway to take the lead.
Newark has undergone a number of expansions over the years that allowed for its three runways (11/29, 4L/22R, and 4R/22L) to serve 37.3 million passengers in 2007, 33.6% of the 111 million passengers that used New York airports.
Working Newark requires a good sense of timing and anticipation as it's two main runways (4L/22R and 4R/22L) are considered one runway according to FAA guidelines. Attention and timing are necessary at Newark since the arriving aircraft are required to taxi across the departure runway in order to park at the gate. Departures and arrivals at Newark are always just above or below LaGuardia arrivals and departures and traffic advisories are frequent making the TRACON a fun place to work. Oh, don't forget about Teterboro airport just ~10 nm North/Northeast.
In order to take and utilize ANY training on this page at Newark or its satellite airports, you must have completed the training Here and have received a checkout to work at non-Major facilities. Once you have completed this checkout, you may click the Levels below.
