Welcome to the TRACON. Everything is a lot different from this point on.
So, you're in the radar room now. Well, now everything changes quite a bit. The aircraft are moving faster, going all over the World and not just to a few runways or gates, and now you gotta get them farther apart to help create separation thousands of miles away. It is also at this point where you'll start to pick up additional territory. You'll start to learn operations at LaGuardia and Kennedy and how they fit into Departure at Newark. Eventually, if you like, you'll be running them all. Oh, don't forget, if no one is on at DEL-TWR, you gotta do that too.
BEFORE you carry out any training on this page, you must have:
1) Completed the training on the Newark Tower Page
Earning Solo Departure Certification at Newark
1) Controller Panel take ALL TRACON Departure Training Classes (Classes 14x).
2) Read and study the TRACON/Departure section of the Newark Facility SOP.
3) Request a Sweatbox session using the Training Request Forum, or have an Instructor or Mentor Observe you working traffic. Once the session(s) are completed, you will be given certification to work the position solo. If you have not been promoted to VATUSA S3 (TMA) yet, the promotion will be carried out once you are approved to work solo.
Next Step - Earning Promotion to Level 5: Approach
Spend some time online and most importantly, work the position. The Training Staff will observe you and help you learn Departure top to bottom. Once that is complete, we'll look for you to advance.
In order to begin training for Approach at Newark:
1) Complete a practical examination of Departure skills (can be a mix of online and Sweatbox)
2) Pass the ZNY Level 4 (DEP) Basic ATC Exam over voice with a NY instructor
3) Pass the ZNY Level 4 (DEP) ZNY SOP Exam over voice with a NY instructor
Once you have passed the required exams, you can start your Approach training by going to the Newark Approach Training Page
